This is the only set available that features both the commemorative silver dollar and the common loon aureate dollar.The silver dollar celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Navy. Prior to 1881, the British Royal Navy was called on to guard our shores and after 1881, the Canadian Department of Marine and Fisheries took over the task. They had 32 vessels, some of them armed.
In the early 20th Cantury, Canadians were torn between avoiding the foreign conflict brewing in Europe and their close ties with Great Britain.
When the First World War began, the RCN was woefully underdeveloped, with only 2 cruisers and a smattering of fisheries vessels, operated by 379 officers and men. By the end of the war, it had grown to almost 100 vessels and 9,500 sailors.
