Harry Potter Coins... Magic or Overkill?

Autumn 2001 brings a feature film debut for Harry Potter fans and six different Harry Potter themed Crown coins from the Isle of Man. The first copper nickel One Crown piece, Casting A Spell, arrived in our Vancouver stores this week. The initial coins were apparently delivered in the U.K. for Halloween, with five more designs: Quidditch, Birth of Norbert, Key Among the Keys, Journey to Hogwarts, and Potions Class, slated for November release there.

Licensed by Warner Brothers, and approved by Queen Elizabeth II, the coins bear images of Harry Potter on the design side and a contemporary portrait of the queen on the other.

Issue price, in the U.K., is Ten Pounds, plus about USD $10 shipping, making the coins quite pricey for fans on a modest budget. Might Harry Potter coins spread a little magic in the coin collecting world? Proof Silver, and smaller Gold, limited edition versions, are also available at even higher prices.

If coins join the marketing hype of Potter mania, at least they are on the international radar screen. Perhaps some of the wonder of collecting coins will be embraced by those who enjoy the world of Harry Potter.
